Beef is Not a Bargaining Chip
We’re calling on our beef advocates and champions! Many of you supported us previously and helped us achieve success with advocacy efforts. Remember “Don’t Label my Beef”? Now, we need your help again!
A lot is happening in the world of trade and Canada is pushing forward to secure many trade deals as possible. Trade can be a great thing, but it has to benefit Canadians and be a win for our economy.
Canada is negotiating with Mercosur (i.e., Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) right now and this is one deal that could end up hurting and displacing Canadian beef farmers and ranchers. Why? These countries have the lowest cost and quality beef in the world. Increasing their share of imports would displace locally and sustainably produced Canadian beef which would be a huge loss for consumers, the environment, rural communities and farm families across Canada. A beef deal with Mercosur risks undermining farmers and ranchers at a time when we are starting to rebuild the Canadian cattle herd.
Canadian beef farmers and ranchers are proud of our high animal health, labour and food safety standards which leads to sustainably and responsibly produced Canadian beef, while providing vital environmental benefits like ecosystem protection, carbon sequestration and wildlife habitat. In contrast, Mercosur beef does not meet the same standards.
Canadian beef is NOT a bargaining chip and we need your help!
The government needs to hear from you. Stand up for Canadian beef farmers and ranchers and write your Member of Parliament to say NO to Mercosur beef access.
Send an email to your MP here: www.cattle.ca/mercosur
Thank you for your support—together we can ensure Canadian beef stays on the grocery store shelves and at the table of Canadian families. If you would like to learn more, please visit: www.cattle.ca/mercosur.
Sincerely,
Canadian Cattle Association
